Planning a Christmas Family Getaway
If you’d like to get away from it all this winter, then planning the right festive getaway might be essential. You can take your family away to some far-flung wonderland, and perhaps even enjoy the day itself while you’re out there. You might find that this helps to create a more memorable occasion – but there are challenges to be anticipated here.
Planning Christmas can be a stressful thing. Planning a holiday can be stressful, too. So, clearly, planning a holiday at Christmas can potentially create a perfect storm. It’s vital that we approach the project in the right way. So, what steps should we take?
Choosing the right festive destination
Depending on your preferences, you might seek to escape the cold weather with a trip to a tropical destination, or to pursue the cold weather with a snowy escape. Ski holidays in France are a popular choice if you’d like to remain active. On the other hand, you might go for a European city break, at which you’ll be able to enjoy an amazing, authentic Christmas market.
For best results, and minimal fuss, it’s a good idea to bring the family together and talk about what everyone wants and expects from their trip. This way, you’ll stand a better chance of keeping everyone happy.
Budgeting, booking and school holiday timing
If you end up spending beyond your means, the result will often be stress. Make sure that you set a budget carefully, and that it includes an additional ten percent cash, so that you can deal with unexpected emergencies when they arrive.
The earlier you book, generally speaking, the less likely you are to be turned away from your preferred accommodation. This is particularly important if you’re going to be travelling during the UK school holidays, when demand is highest.
Travel logistics and preparation
You’ll need all of your essential documents in hand before you go. This means your passports, boarding passes, and any necessary visas. It might be that your plans are disrupted by industrial action at the airport, or some other external event. While these things may be beyond your control, it’s critical that you’re aware of them. Check the government’s advice for foreign travel.
Making Christmas special away from home
Christmas without tradition can feel a little bit empty and sterile. While you’ll get the chance to experience a foreign take on the season, you might feel that you’re missing out on what you’ve all come to expect from it. For this reason, it’s a good idea to make time for the occasional small dose of Christmas cheer – whether that takes the form of a ready-packed Christmas stocking, or a special seasonal activity.
