Returning to Work in Construction? Here’s a Refresher Guide
Construction moves at a fast pace. If you’ve been away for five or ten years to raise children or focus on family, you might feel like the industry has moved on without you. It’s true that the way projects are managed has shifted toward higher safety standards and digital workflows.
Coming back to work is a positive move for your career. There’s currently a high demand for experienced managers and coordinators who understand the practical side of building. You will want to get up to speed with how sites operate today so you can hit the ground running, so let’s get into it and see what’s changed in the last few years.
How Site Safety Has Changed
Health and safety is no longer a box-ticking exercise. Over the last decade, there has been a massive shift in how we look after people on site. There’s a much bigger focus on mental health and wellbeing than there was ten years ago. You will see posters for helplines and mental health first-aiders on almost every major project now.
The rules around physical safety have also tightened. Sites are much stricter about personal protective equipment and exclusion zones. You will find that risk assessments are more detailed and involve the whole team instead of just being a document that sits in a folder in the site office.
Renew Your Professional Certifications
Your old qualifications might have expired while you were away. If you held a management role, your safety certificates are likely out of date. Most of these certifications last for five years. You don’t always have to start from scratch if you want to get back into a leadership role.
If your SMSTS certificate is still in date, you can take a two-day refresher of the SMSTS course to bring your knowledge up to speed. If it has already expired, which is likely after a break of five years or more, you will need to complete the full five-day SMSTS course again. There is no grace period, so it is worth checking your certificate date before booking.
Refreshing your site management credentials is a smart way to show employers you’re ready for responsibility. It covers the latest changes in the Law and new environmental regulations. Having this on your CV makes the transition back into a full-time role much smoother.
Modern Tools for Modern Projects
Digital technology has replaced a lot of the old paper-based systems. Ten years ago, you might have carried a roll of physical drawings around. Today, most site managers use tablets or rugged laptops to view the latest designs. This ensures everyone is working from the same version of a plan.
There are a few key areas where tech has taken over:
- Site inductions are often done through apps or online portals before a worker even arrives.
- Reporting software allows you to log accidents or near-misses instantly on your phone.
- Drones are frequently used to survey large sites and track progress from the air.
- Daily logs and photos are uploaded to a central cloud system so the client can see updates in real-time.
In a Nutshell
Getting back into the swing of things takes time, but your previous experience is still valuable. While the tools and some of the rules have changed, the core principles of building haven’t. Once you have your certificates in order and familiarise yourself with the new tech, you’ll find that your site skills return very quickly.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions about new software or safety protocols. Most firms are happy to support returning workers because they need people with real-world knowledge. With a bit of preparation and a refreshed set of qualifications, you can pick up your career exactly where you left it.
